Plugs are produced through tissue culture rather than grown from seed. This allows us to select plant material with desirable genetic characteristics, so the resulting plants are uniform and consistent rather than variable, as seedlings can be.
Plugs are approximately 30 cm tall and should be replanted into 2.5-litre bags filled preferably with river sand and a pure, natural organic fertiliser made from mature chicken manure, incorporated into the soil mixture. Each plant requires at least 150–200 ml of water every 2–3 days to keep the growing medium moist. The roots may take up to 10 months to strengthen before the plant can be moved into a larger bag or planted in a plantation.
Pros: Plugs can adapt to the local climate more easily. They are more cost-effective to transport, and you can take part in nurturing the bamboo in your own nursery.
Cons: It can take up to 10 months before a plug is ready to be planted in a garden or on farmland.
NB: Plugs are usually only sold in boxes of 540 plants and not sold separately to Nurseries or the public, except if there is a Nation wide promotion to promote species, like this one. Our Supplier receives a yearly phytosanitary certificate verifying that all the agricultural products(bamboo plants and -plugs) have been inspected and are pest and disease free. This is for importing and exporting the bamboo plants and -plugs. In the more than 25
years this supplier supplied Africa, none of their products has been declined by customs. They are also inspected by the Department of agriculture, land reform & rural development on a yearly base.

Strong, thick-walled culms are suitable for construction, scaffolding, poles, agricultural implements, furniture and craft work, baskets, mats, and paper pulp. Young shoots are eaten in some regions.
