Oxytenanthera abyssinica is a woody perennial grass with erect culms that are 6-15 meters tall and 6-10 centimeters in diameter. The culms are solid or semi-solid, unlike the hollow structure of most bamboo species. The culms have an internode length of 20 centimeters and thick walls.

Uses: Pulp, handicraft, edible shoots, fodder, weaving, basketry, building material, furniture, tapped for its juice & fermented for an alcoholic beverage or wine. Biomass, charcoal & energy.
